The Football Association of Macau, China was set up in 1939 to run the game across the territory, and it took the national side nearly a decade to appear: the first match came on 29 March 1948, a 4–2 win over Hong Kong. That fixture also marked the start of the oldest rivalry in Macau's football, one still played out through the Hong Kong–Macau Interport Cup.

Macau joined FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation in 1978. Its best run arrived in 2016, when it reached the final of the AFC Solidarity Cup before losing to Nepal. Niki Torrão, the side's former captain, finished as joint top scorer in that tournament.

The team plays in green and white, a choice that has given the side two nicknames: The Greens, for the shirts, and the Lotus Team, after the flower that stands for Macau itself. Cheang Cheng Ieong holds the appearance record with 58 caps, while Chan Kin Seng remains the leading scorer with 17 goals. One player took the opposite path: Augusto Rocha, born in Macau, went on to earn seven caps for Portugal in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

The bench has turned over quickly in recent years, with Lázaro Oliveira giving way to Kwok Kar Lok and then to the current caretaker, Emmanuel Noruega.
