Football in Myanmar reorganised itself after the political reforms of 2011. The Chinthe play their home matches at Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon, a ground of 32,000, and the federation's competitive world has widened over the decades: the Asian Football Confederation took the association in 1954, the ASEAN Football Federation in 1996.

The best it has managed there is a semi-final in 2004.

Which sits oddly against what came before. In 1968 Myanmar — then Burma — reached the final of the Asian Cup and lost to Iran. Two years earlier, and again in 1970, the team had taken gold at the SEA Games, beating Iran in the final on the second occasion. Those two decades remain the high-water mark, and nothing since has come close to them.

The women's team carries its own name, The Asian Lionesses.

The first international came on 17 February 1950, away to Hong Kong, and it went badly: a 2–5 defeat. By then the governing body had already been in place for three years. The Burma Football Federation was set up in 1947, twelve months before the country took its independence from Britain — a football association assembled before the state it would represent existed in its own right.
