The senior team that had carried the name F.C. Maia went under in 2011, but the collapse had already emptied the club two years earlier, when it was thrown out of its championship in 2007–08 under the weight of debts it could not clear. Out of that wreckage, on 22 July 2009, a successor club was formed.
The rebuilt club found its level in district football, winning the 1st Division of the Porto Football Association in the 2012–13 season and earning a place in the Liga Pro AF Porto, where it has stayed since. Locally it is known as the Maiatos, and its games against neighbours such as FC Pedras Rubras, Pedrouços AC, Folgosa and Nogueirense FC are grouped together under one label, the "derby maiato," rather than fixed on a single old rival.
President António Fernando has run the club since its founding.
