Lilongwe sends its footballers up through the Football Association of Malawi's youth structure before they ever pull on the senior shirt, and the Under-20 side, known as the Junior Flames, is where that apprenticeship is judged. The team has been entered in COSAFA's youth championship since the competition's first edition in 1983, and its home fixtures fall at the Bingu National Stadium, which holds around 40,000.

The Junior Flames have reached the final of the COSAFA Under-20 Championship twice without winning it. In 2003 they lost 4-0 to Zambia, and in 2025, more than two decades later, South Africa beat them 3-0 in the final. Between those two finals came a string of fourth-place finishes, in 1986, 2000, 2006 and 2011.

What the age-grade team is ultimately judged on is who comes out the other end of it. Stanley Sanudi went through the Junior Flames set-up and became captain and the most-capped player for the senior Malawi Flames.
