Namibia's independence in 1990 brought a new football association almost immediately, and an under-20 side followed the same year. The Young Warriors lost their first match 3–0, away to Lesotho in Maseru.

That gap showed clearly enough in 2009, when South Africa's under-20s put nine goals past them without reply. Namibia has never had an answer for that fixture in the COSAFA U-20 Championship, though the team came closer twice: runner-up finishes in 2010, beaten 4–1 by Zambia, and again in 2020, undone by a single Mozambique goal.

A debut at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations came in 2021 in Mauritania, where the side reached the group stage. The team no longer has a proper home ground of its own: both Independence Stadium and Sam Nujoma Stadium were ruled below standard by the Confederation of African Football in 2021, pushing recent fixtures out to Hage Geingob Rugby Stadium or abroad.
