There is a new man in the dugout in Managua: Juan Cruz Real took over as head coach in April 2026, taking on a national side that has never lifted a CONCACAF title and whose best finish in the region's Gold Cup era was sixth place, back in 1967. Whatever comes next has to be measured against that ceiling.

The high point sits further back still. In 1951 Nicaragua finished third at the CCCF Championship, a result the team has not matched since in any regional tournament, CONCACAF's later merger of the CCCF and NAFC only having raised the bar.

Two names carry the team's record books. Juan Barrera, also the side's captain, is its all-time leading scorer with 26 goals, and he took that scoring form abroad, playing for SCR Altach in Austria. Josué Quijano holds the appearance record, with 108 caps accumulated across years of matches against the same regional opponents, Costa Rica, Honduras and El Salvador chief among them, in fixtures that have never produced a single named rivalry the way some neighbouring countries' derbies have.

Nicaragua plays in blue and white, known to their own supporters as Los Pinoleros, and they train and play at the Estadio Nacional de Fútbol in Managua, a ground due to be rebuilt and renamed Estadio Nacional de Fútbol Dignidad, with capacity rising to 23,000, once work begins in March 2026.

None of that early promise showed on the day the team first took the field. On 1 May 1929, in its first international match, Nicaragua lost 9–0 to El Salvador, a scoreline it matched for grimness only once more, conceding ten without reply to Honduras in 1946.
