Nürnberg II

Nuremberg and Fürth sit a few kilometres apart in Middle Franconia, and neither has ever let the other forget it. The rivalry reaches even the reserve sides. When Nürnberg II meet Greuther Fürth II, people call it the "kleines Frankenderby", the little Franconian derby.

Nürnberg II is the second string of 1. FC Nürnberg. They have played in the same red and white since 1900, although the first team is better known for wine-red and black. Until 2005 they were 1. FC Nürnberg Amateure. Then the name changed for good to Nürnberg II, after a brief trial of it in 1996 that was dropped again the following year. They play at Max-Morlock-Platz, a small ground in the Sportpark Valznerweiher. Only for the occasional match do they move into the 50,000-seat Max-Morlock-Stadion next door in name, if not in scale.

Their work is mostly to prepare players for the first team, and some of those players went a long way. Timothy Chandler played 17 games and scored four goals for the side in 2010–11. He then moved up to the senior squad and later played for the US national team. Robert Mak passed through early in his career, then went to Manchester City and played for Slovakia.

The side was promoted to the Regionalliga Süd in 2008 after finishing third in the Bayernliga, and it has not been relegated since. Second place in 2009/10 was the best finish in that league for a long time. It was the Bayernliga that had denied them a title: they finished runners-up five times, most recently in 2005/06, and never won it.
