Olhanense

The Campeonato de Portugal came in 1923–24, the top tier of the game as it existed before the Taça de Portugal took its place, and it remains the only national title Olhanense have to their name. They came close again two decades later, losing the 1944–45 final. Founded on 27 April 1912 in Olhão, the club took the black-and-red stripes that gave rise to the nickname Os Leões, working back up through the Segunda Divisão and Terceira Divisão in spells during the 1930s, 1940s and 1970s.

Promotion to the Primeira Liga in 2009, sealed by winning the Segunda Liga under Jorge Costa, gave Olhão its top-flight football back after decades away. It did not last: relegation followed in 2014, a season played through three different managers, and the club dropped again from the second tier in 2017. By 2023 it had fallen to the Algarve FA First Division, the fifth tier, a level it had never occupied before.

Daniel Carriço spent two seasons at the club before 2008, then went on to win four UEFA Europa League titles with Sevilla; Ricardo Formosinho, who played there and later managed the side in the early 1990s, is remembered on the other side of the touchline.

The rivalry that still defines the club's calendar is with Farense, the Algarve derby that locals rate as the fiercest fixture the region has to offer, with Portimonense making it a three-way regional contest. Home games are played at the Estádio José Arcanjo, in a town on the Algarve coast that has watched the club's fortunes run from a national final to the fifth division and back up again.
