Petržalka

The team that won Slovakia's title in 2005 and again in 2008 is Artmedia Petržalka. The sponsor has gone, and so has the top flight. What is left carries the founding year in its name — FC Petržalka 1898.

The second of those championships came alongside the Slovak Cup, won that same 2007–08 season with a final against Spartak Trnava.

The name on the shirt has changed more than once. When the club was founded in 1898, Bratislava was Pozsony, a Hungarian city, and the club was Pozsonyi Torna Egyesület. The district across the Danube was Engerau in German, and that word survives as the nickname supporters still use. Black and white stripes have outlasted every rebrand.

Petržalka today is the dense panel-block district on the right bank, and the ground sits inside it rather than on the edge of town. Štadión FC Petržalka 1898 opened in 2012 with room for a few hundred, and has since grown to hold 1,500 — a figure that would have looked absurd against the crowds of the Artmedia years, and which now fits the level the club plays at. The youth side of the operation runs out of the same address.
