Oeiras hosts the Portuguese Football Federation's headquarters, and it is there, at the Jamor National Sports Complex, that the country's under-20 side trains and plays its home matches — a fitting arrangement for a team that exists mainly to feed the under-21s. The side wears red with green shorts at home, white away, and it has been doing so since 1979, when a 1–0 win over Spain in Cáceres opened its record. That same year the team reached the quarter-finals on its first appearance at the World Youth Championship, the tournament now known as the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

A decade later came the run that still defines the team's history. The 1989 squad, since remembered as the "Golden Generation" and built around players such as Paulo Alves and João Pinto, beat Nigeria to the title. A 1995 squad took bronze and, in 2011, a side led by Nélson Oliveira's goals lost the final to Brazil.

Portugal won the Toulon Tournament in 1992, 2001 and 2003, then again in 2024 with a win over Tunisia. Diogo Dalot, Rafael Leão and Diogo Costa all wore it in 2019, Gonçalo Ramos in 2023.
