Czech Republic U20

The Czech Republic U20 side spent the rest of the night chasing Argentina, but never finding the equaliser in a 2–1 defeat. It remains the furthest a Czech youth team has gone at a FIFA U-20 World Cup, and the run through Canada that summer produced a squad that kept turning up in the senior game afterwards — Sebastian Prödl and Zlatko Junuzović both went on to long careers at that level.

It was not the country's first serious run at the tournament. In 2001, in Argentina, the team reached the quarter-finals before Paraguay shut them out 0–1, with Petr Čech already in goal — the same goalkeeper who would go on to define a generation of Czech football at senior level. Two years after the Toronto final, the 2009 edition in Egypt went the other way entirely: the team went out in the group stage.

There is no fixed home ground here, no club badge worn season after season — the side is picked fresh for each qualifying cycle by the Czech Football Association, and its games are scattered across whichever venue a tournament assigns, sometimes CFIG Arena, sometimes abroad. The current group plays its football in the UEFA U20 Elite League, where the 2024–25 campaign brought a single win, 2–1 over Switzerland, against defeats to Portugal, Romania, England and Poland. Missing out on qualification for the 2023 World Cup showed how far that development pipeline had drifted from the standard set in 2007.

At this level rivalry is less about one fixed opponent than about the country that beat them when it mattered most — Argentina remains the name attached to the closest this Czech generation came to a world title.
