Wohlen is not where Swiss football sends its senior side, but its municipal ground, Stadion Niedermatten, hosts the under-20s often enough. The team otherwise moves around the country and abroad as fixtures dictate, carrying no fixed address of its own.

Nicknamed "Nati," the same tag the senior team carries, the under-20s wear red shirts, white shorts and red socks at home, switching to white and red away.

The side has reached the FIFA U-20 World Cup twice, in 1994 and again in 2013, behind Nigeria each time. Domestically, the Under-20 Four Nations Tournament gave the age group its clearest run of form: after three straight runner-up finishes between 2002-03 and 2004-05, Switzerland won the competition in 2008-09 with thirteen points from six matches. When the tournament was replaced by the Under-20 Elite League in 2017-18, the results turned: sixth and last in that debut season, fifth the year after, then no entry at all in 2021-22 and 2022-23.

Names have passed through the squad rather than stayed with it — Manuel Akanji made his debut against Germany in September 2014, Albian Ajeti his against Italy the following March.

There is no fixed rival attached to the under-20s the way there is at club level; opponents change with whichever tournament the calendar assigns, and in a competition built on age rather than geography.
