Every couple of summers the same three names come up when Portugal's under-21s go deep: Italy, Spain, and now Germany. The Esperanças have finished as runners-up three times at the European Under-21 Championship, and each defeat carries its own shape — a 0–1 loss after extra time to Italy in 1994, a penalty shootout lost to Sweden in 2015 after a goalless draw, and a 0–1 defeat to Germany in 2021, a final they reached by beating Italy 5–3 after extra time in the quarters and Spain 1–0 in the semis. A third-place finish came in 2004, when they beat Sweden 3–2 after extra time in the play-off.

The squad plays out of the Estádio Nacional in Jamor, in red shirts and white shorts that echo the senior team.
