Erling Haaland played three matches for Norway's under-21 side in 2018. The team, run these days by Jan Peder Jalland, has never been a fixed club so much as a relay of the country's best young players, and its record shows the gaps that come with that: ten straight failures to reach the finals between 1978 and 1996, then near-misses in play-offs against Spain in 2000, Serbia and Montenegro in 2004, Serbia again in 2017, and Finland in 2025. What it has produced, twice, is a bronze medal at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship. In 1998, in Romania, Norway beat Sweden in the quarter-final, lost to Spain on a golden goal in the semi, then beat the Netherlands 2–0 in the third-place match with both goals from Steffen Iversen, still the side's record scorer. Fifteen years later, in Israel, they went out to the Czech Republic in the semi-final and again took bronze, this time seeing off England 3–1. Between those two tournaments and a group-stage exit in 2023, the finals have been the exception rather than the rule for a side that has qualified only three times since its first match in 1972. Tommy Svindal Larsen holds the appearance record with 41 caps, a mark set across years when the team had no ground of its own to speak of. It plays now at Marienlyst Stadion in Drammen, a stadium that holds under 9,000 and has hosted some of the bigger nights, including the second leg of the 2013 play-off against France.
