Finland fielded no youth national side worth the name until European football itself decided under-21 sides needed a proper championship: the qualifiers for that first UEFA tournament began in 1978, and Finland's age-group team took shape to enter them, finishing third in its group. For three decades the side existed mostly as a proving ground, a place where players passed through on their way to the senior team or nowhere in particular.

That changed in 2009. Under Markku Kanerva, Pikkuhuuhkajat — The Little Eagle-Owls — reached the final tournament for the first time, the first Finnish youth side of any kind to get that far. They drew the Netherlands, Germany and Russia in the group stage and lost all three, but the barrier was down. What followed was not a run of near-misses so much as a long stretch in the wilderness: more than a decade without another finals appearance, squads rebuilt and rebuilt again.

The second qualification, in 2025 under Mika Lehkosuo, came the hard way, through a play-off win over Norway, and led to Slovakia and another group-stage exit. Between those two finals the shirt passed through the hands of players who went on to define Finnish football at senior level — Teemu Pukki chief among them, though Lukas Hradecky and Joel Pohjanpalo also wore it before either became a fixture for the seniors.

Home games are staged at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium, and the fixture that still means most is against Sweden's under-21s, a meeting the Finnish press calls the Nordic Youth Derby, with Norway and Denmark treated as rivals of a lesser sort. None of that history explains a scoreline from March 2026: in qualifying for the 2027 championship, Finland beat San Marino 8–0, the heaviest win in the team's history.
