The team's opening act, in 1976, set a tone it would spend the next five decades contradicting: a 4–1 defeat to Yugoslavia in Zagreb on 9 October, the first time Spain sent out an under-21 side at all. In 1986, against Italy, Spain came back from a 3–3 aggregate scoreline to take the European Under-21 Championship on penalties.
The others followed at intervals that never let the shirt go stale: 1998 against Greece, 2011 against Switzerland, 2013 against Italy again, this time settled inside normal play at 4–2, and 2019 against Germany.
That line runs through names bigger than the age group itself. Gerard Deulofeu remains the side's most capped and most prolific player, but the shirt has passed through Xavi Hernández, David de Gea and Isco on the way to senior careers. Luis de la Fuente took the 2019 title as coach before being promoted to manage the senior national side in December 2022.
Spain has no single home ground, rotating qualifiers and friendlies through stadiums such as Carlos Belmonte and La Romareda while training at the Ciudad del Fútbol in Las Rozas.
