San Marino U21

The under-21 side was never meant to compete on its own terms; it exists because the Federazione Sammarinese Giuoco Calcio, formed in 1987 and admitted to UEFA the following year, needed a pathway for players too old for youth football and not yet ready for the senior team. The U21s took their first competitive step in qualifying for the 1990 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, and their first match set the tone for what followed: a 0–5 defeat to Switzerland in Serravalle on 6 July 1989.

Nothing since has softened that record much. San Marino has never reached the final tournament, and its qualifying campaigns have produced only three wins in total. Two of them were never earned on the pitch — Sweden forfeited in 2004 and Armenia in 2007, both for fielding ineligible players. The first genuine victory did not arrive until 6 September 2013, when the team beat Wales 1–0 in qualifying for the 2015 championship, a result still cited as the closest thing the side has to a defining night. A goalless draw with Greece the previous year sits alongside it as one of the few respectable scorelines against stronger opposition.

Samuele Zannoni holds the U21 appearance record with 12 caps and has since stepped up to the senior side, one of several players the age group has fed upward; Filippo Fabbri made a shorter U21 stint of four caps before building over 40 appearances for the national team. The side plays its sky blue, navy and white kit at the Stadio Olimpico in Serravalle, occasionally shifting to the Stadio di Acquaviva. There is no rival to speak of — matches against fellow bottom-tier nations like Andorra and Liechtenstein tend to go one way, and a 3–0 win over Gibraltar in June 2024 counted as a rare bright spot. A first appearance at the finals of the European Under-21 Championship remains the one thing the team has yet to manage.
