Nine years after the 2019 semi-final run, the Romania under-21 side is chasing the same ceiling: Daniel Pancu's squad has already secured qualification for the 2025 European Under-21 Championship. That 2019 campaign remains the reference point — a semi-final defeat to Germany, 4–2, reached without losing a single match in qualifying or the group stage, still the best finish the side has produced.
The team took shape in 1976, when UEFA restructured its youth competitions and replaced the old under-23 format; Romania played its first qualifying campaign for the 1978 championship. The nickname, "Tricolorii mici," borrows directly from the senior team's flag colours, and the kit follows suit: yellow shirts, blue shorts, red socks. There is no fixed home ground — fixtures rotate between Giulești in Bucharest, the municipal stadium in Sibiu and Ilie Oană in Ploiești.
Hosting the 1998 finals, Romania reached the quarter-finals before Netherlands ended the run. Against Hungary, the record tilts heavily in Romania's favour — six wins from eight championship meetings, including a 2–1 win during the 2021 tournament. A 2016 loss to Bulgaria broke a long unbeaten stretch. Among the players who passed through the age group, George Pușcaș left as its all-time top scorer, while Ianis Hagi and Radu Drăgușin were prominent names from recent vintages.
With qualification for next year's finals already banked, the immediate task is building a squad capable of matching, not just approaching, the 2019 semi-final mark.
