Patrik Carlgren spent the 2015 final against Portugal waiting for one moment, and it came in the shoot-out. The Sweden goalkeeper saved the decisive penalty, and the Under-21s won 4–3 on spot-kicks after a 0–0 draw. It remains the only time this side has won the UEFA European Under-21 Championship.

Håkan Ericson coached that team, and John Guidetti scored five goals on the way to the final. Sweden had been close before. In 1992 they reached the two-legged final under Kennet Andersson, and lost to Italy 2–1 on aggregate. Third place in 1990 and again in 2009, when Marcus Berg finished as top scorer with seven goals, did not bring a trophy either.

The team was set up in 1976 and lost its first official match 3–1 in Vaasa, against Finland. It entered European Championship qualifying two years later. It has no permanent home. Qualifiers and friendlies rotate between Falkenberg, Kalmar, Jönköping and Helsingborg, and the squad gathers near Stockholm, at Bosön on Lidingö, before matches. The Swedish Football Association (Svenska Fotbollförbundet) runs the side from Solna.

The names that passed through are a long list, from Tomas Brolin and Johan Elmander to Pontus Jansson and Robin Quaison. Oscar Hiljemark has played more games than any of them: 37 caps.
