Zenica gave the team its home ground, Bilino Polje. The team took the field for the first time that October, away to the Czech Republic in a qualifier for the European Under-21 Championship, and came back with a goalless draw.

The closest the Dragons have come to reaching the finals was in qualifying for 2007. They finished second in their group, which sent them into a play-off against the Czech Republic — a repeat, a decade on, of that first opponent. A home draw, 1-1, kept the tie alive; a 2-1 defeat in Czech territory ended it.

What the level has produced instead is players who moved on to define the senior team. Edin Džeko came through these ranks before becoming Bosnia and Herzegovina's record scorer and most-capped international. Sejad Salihović, who scored in that 2007 play-off defeat, was another to graduate to the senior side.

Zenica shares hosting duties with Sarajevo, where Grbavica has also staged home fixtures. As of this month, the Dragons sit second in their group in qualifying for the 2027 European Under-21 Championship.
