Group G of qualifying for the 2027 European Under-21 Championship puts the Netherlands against Norway, Slovenia, Israel and Bosnia and Herzegovina. At the 2023 finals in Georgia and Romania, Jong Oranje finished third in a group behind Portugal and Belgium, drawing all three matches, then went out in the quarter-finals to England, beaten 2–1.

Michael Reiziger took over as coach in July 2023, following Erwin van de Looi, who had held the post for five years. The team's benchmark remains 2006 and 2007, back-to-back European titles under Foppe de Haan, who beat Ukraine 3–0 in the first final and Serbia 4–1 in the second.

De Vijverberg, De Graafschap's ground in Doetinchem, has served as the team's home venue, with a record crowd of 8,611 there for an 8–0 win over Andorra in November 2017 — well short of the stadium's 12,600 capacity. The line to the senior team runs through names like Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, still the side's all-time leading scorer with 18 goals, and more recently Joshua Zirkzee and Virgil van Dijk both passed through on their way up.

The team traces back to 1975, formed to prepare the Netherlands for the first UEFA European Under-21 Championship in 1978; before that, Dutch football fielded an under-23 side instead.
