Stožice sits on the northern edge of Ljubljana.

The side came into being in 1992, the year after Slovenia's independence, formed under the newly established Football Association of Slovenia rather than inherited from Yugoslav football. For most of its history it stayed on the margins of the European Under-21 Championship. That changed at the 2021 tournament, held jointly with Hungary, when Slovenia reached the group stage and beat Croatia U21 along the way. The team returned to the group stage again in 2025.

The record books lean on a small set of names. Ermin Šiljak remains the side's leading scorer at the age group, level with Alen Ožbolt on ten goals.
