Preussen Munster

Christian Pander came out of the club's own youth set-up in Münster, went on to win two caps for Germany and scored on his debut against England in 2007. He came back later in a different guise, first as interim head coach, then as chairman.

Preußen were playing for the German title long before that. The forward line of the late 1940s and early 1950s, the one Münster still calls the Hundred-Thousand-Mark Line, carried the club to the 1951 championship final, where 1. FC Kaiserslautern beat them. Twelve years on, Preußen were among the sixteen clubs chosen to start the Bundesliga in 1963, and among the first to leave it: one season, then relegation, and no way back since.

The lowest point came in 2006, when poor results and money spent on promotions that never arrived pushed the club down to the Oberliga Westfalen. Bankruptcy was avoided through restructuring rather than rescue. Promotion followed in 2008, the 3. Liga in 2011, and in 2022–23 the Regionalliga West title took them up again.

The Westfalen-Derby against Arminia Bielefeld remains the fixture the city measures itself by.

Home is the LVM-Preußenstadion on Hammer Straße, holding around 14,300, most of it standing: only 6,931 seats. Building work now under way is due to finish around 2028 and will lift capacity past 19,000. Jorrit Hendrix arrived in 2024; Peter Niemeyer, sporting director since 2020, has been the one assembling squads for the climb.
