Ricardo Rivera scored more goals for Puerto Rico than anyone else who has worn the shirt, twenty in total. Gerald Díaz made more appearances than any teammate, forty caps.

The Federación Puertorriqueña de Fútbol took charge of the national team from 1940, joined FIFA in 1960 and the CONCACAF in 1961. The team's own history began earlier than either membership: a 1–1 draw with Cuba in Havana on 12 November 1940, the first international it ever played.

Results since have run to extremes. A 9–0 win over Saint Martin on 9 September 2012 stands as the largest margin the team has managed; going the other way, a 15–0 defeat to the Netherlands Antilles on 15 January 1959 has stood unmatched. Neither a World Cup nor a Gold Cup final tournament has followed. The closest the team has come to breaking through was reaching the promotion playoff round of League C in the 2022–23 CONCACAF Nations League, where Haiti ended the run.

The Dominican Republic is the opponent Puerto Rico has faced most often in the region, twelve meetings without either side attaching a name to the fixture. Haiti carries its own weight as a rival, sharpened by that playoff exit.
