Real Oviedo II

Adrián went through this dressing room before the crest across town nearly took his parent club down for good, and when supporters organised the 2012 rescue that kept Real Oviedo alive, it was players who had come up through Vetusta who carried the weight of that campaign.

The team opposing him at the time was not Real Oviedo itself. Vetusta grew out of a split: on 16 April 1926, members unhappy with the merger that had just created Real Oviedo broke away and formed Sportiva Ovetense, a rival club in its own right rather than anyone's reserve side. It changed hands and names more than once after that — Unión Sportiva Ovetense in 1929, Sociedad Deportiva Vetusta in 1940 — before folding formally into Real Oviedo as its B team in 1991. The 2003 financial collapse of the parent club took the reserves down with it, and Vetusta did not exist again until 2006. When it returned to its old name in 2021, it was reclaiming what the breakaway founders had called it in the first place.

They train and play at the Ciudad Deportiva de El Requexón, a ground built for a reserve side rather than a crowd, though the team has stepped out at the Carlos Tartiere when the occasion called for it. Blue and white, same as upstairs.

The Asturian derby has its senior version at Sporting, but Vetusta's own edge runs against Sporting's reserve team, a rivalry played out a level below the one that fills stadiums. Three Tercera División titles came in 1987–88, 1989–90 and 2017–18, and under the division's later name as Tercera Federación, Vetusta has added two more, in 2021–22 and 2024–25.
