«Blanquiazules (the White-and-Blues)»
Avilés grew up around steel. The Asturian port town built its identity, and much of its workforce, around the Ensidesa works, and the football club that carries the town's name still carries that industrial word in its own: Real Avilés Industrial Club de Fútbol.
The club dates its own history to 1903, when Sport Club Avilesino first took the field, and its official website still marks that year in its address. The entity that fields the team today is younger, though: it was formed in 1983, when Real Avilés CF merged with CD Ensidesa, the works team of the steel plant. The name has shifted with the club's fortunes, and with Spain's politics, ever since. Alfonso XIII granted it the right to call itself "Real" in 1925. The ban on foreign words under Franco reshaped it again in 1941. The 1983 merger added "Industrial" to the title, bankruptcy took the word back out in 2012, and the club reverted to Real Avilés Industrial CF in July 2023.
Supporters know the team as the Blanquiazules, for the white and blue of the shirt, or simply as Realavilesinos, after the town itself. Home games are played at the Estadio Román Suárez Puerta, an all-seater ground holding 5,352.
The trophy case leans toward regional and lower-division silverware: six Tercera División titles won between 1933 and 1968, and the 1940 Campeonato de España Amateur. The Copa RFEF, won in 2003, sits above the rest. The closest the club has come to the top flight was the 1952/53 season, when it finished third in the Segunda División and went into the play-off for a place in La Liga.
Since last summer, Real Avilés has again played under the name it carried in the years after the Ensidesa merger, the industrial word restored to a title the town first gave it more than a century ago.
