The side began in 1960 under a different name entirely, Club Deportivo Gijón. It took on the rights of SD La Camocha seven years later and became Club Atlético Gijón; from 1978 it was Sporting de Gijón Atlético, from 1991 Sporting Gijón B, and in 2023 it went back to Sporting Atlético. The same shirt throughout: white with red vertical stripes, blue shorts.

The Tercera División title came in 1978–79 and was won again in 1980–81, in 1988–89 and in 2016–17, that last season doubled with the Asturian regional phase of the Copa RFEF. Between those runs sits a Copa de la Liga in 1982–83.

The team is in Tercera Federación now, Group 2.
