Rayo Majadahonda

On 7 June 1976, the town registered one with the Madrid football federation the same day it was founded, and Rayo Majadahonda spent the following decades where most small-town clubs live, cycling through regional football and the fourth tier before reaching Tercera División for the first time in 1987.

The club built a habit of winning that division without staying above it — champions in 1995/96, 1996/97, 2000/01 and 2014/15, each title a ticket back up to Segunda B, each stay there short. The pattern broke in 2017/18. Rayo Majadahonda won its Segunda B group, then went through the promotion play-off, beating Cartagena 1-0 in May 2018 on an own goal from Michel Zabaco to reach Segunda for the first time in the club's history. The stay lasted one season; a 19th-place finish sent them back down in 2018/19. The club turned professional in 2019, converting to S.A.D. status to meet the requirements of playing at that level.

In the Copa del Rey, where the club had never before reached the main draw, the 2021/22 run went furthest of all: a place in the last 32, and a tie against Atlético Madrid.

Home games are played at Cerro del Espino, a ground that holds under 4,000 — a size that has shaped the club's reputation more than any of its results. Majadahonda is known locally less for what it has won than for who has passed through it on the way somewhere else, the sort of club a young player's name gets attached to before it shows up anywhere bigger.
