Racing Ferrol

Racing Club de Ferrol's closest brush with a major trophy came in 1939, when the side reached the final of the Copa del Rey and finished runners-up — as far as a club that has never played in La Liga has got toward Spanish football's biggest prize outside the league table. The same year brought the Campeonato de Galicia, a regional title the club had already taken in 1928 and 1938.

The club traces back to 5 October 1919, when Racing Club and Club Ferrol merged rather than keep competing against each other in the same city.

Staying in the second tier has defined the decades since more than any single trophy: Racing hold the record for the most seasons played in Spain's second division without going up, 36 in total. Tercera División and Segunda División B titles have come along the way, but promotion to the top flight has not.

They play at the Estadio Municipal de A Malata, with room for just over 12,000. Green has stayed the club's colour throughout — green shirts, white shorts, green socks at home — and it is where the nickname Diablos Verdes, the Green Devils, comes from. It stuck in 1928, after a string of matches against Basque clubs left the name attached to Ferrol's side for good.
