Real Madrid II

In the spring of 1980 a reserve side reached the final of the Copa del Rey and found the first team waiting on the other side of it. Castilla Club de Fútbol lost 1–6 to Real Madrid, and because the senior club had also taken the league title that year, the cup place in Europe passed down. Castilla played in the 1980–81 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup — a second team in continental competition, entered through a final it had lost to its own parent.

The club it grew out of had nothing to do with Madrid's academy at first. Agrupación Deportiva Plus Ultra was set up on 16 December 1930, and it played under that name for four decades. Real Madrid took it as a feeder side in 1948; when the sponsoring company broke up, the team was registered on 21 July 1972 as a dependent club and renamed Castilla. Two further changes of name followed in 1991.

The 1983–84 season produced the strangest line in the honours list. Castilla won the Segunda and was not promoted, because Real Madrid was already in the top flight.

Emilio Butragueño came through here before La Quinta del Buitre had a name. Iker Casillas, Dani Carvajal, Achraf Hakimi. Julio Iglesias kept goal for the club in the early 1960s until an injury ended that part of his life.

Home is the Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano at Valdebebas, with 6,000 seats and a squad that empties out every time somebody is called up the road.
