Red Star Merl-Belair

Merl and Belair sat as two neighbouring quarters of Luxembourg City when a group of local footballers formed FC Red Star Merl in April 1927, giving the district its own club rather than sending players elsewhere. The German occupation interrupted even the name: from 1940 the club was made to play as FV Merl, and only in 1944 did it take back the Red Star identity. In 1970, with the club's reach having grown to cover Belair as well, it became FC Red Star Merl-Belair.

The 1950s remain the club's high point. Red Star won the Nationaldivision in 1951–52, and the following year reached the Luxembourg Cup final, where Red Boys Differdange beat them 1–0 — a cup they have never since won. François Müller played on through that period and travelled to the 1952 Helsinki Olympics with the national side, one of several Red Star players of the era to be capped for Luxembourg.

Since dropping out of the top flight in 1957, the club has never really settled there. Promotion back up in 1973 lasted two seasons; the pattern repeated itself after title-winning campaigns in 1997–98, 2004–05 and 2013–14, each followed by relegation the year after. Michael Omosanya came through the youth ranks between 2006 and 2013 before leaving for F91 Dudelange and later playing for Luxembourg's national team.

Red Star now play in the second-tier 1. Division, at the Stade Prince Jean, where 250 seats and standing room for the rest add up to a capacity of 1,750.
