Syra Mensdorf

A village side in Mensdorf needed a name of its own by the spring of 1938, and Syra Mensdorf took the field that May 1st, playing in yellow and blue ever since. It has stayed at the level a club its size occupies: no season in the National Division, the 1. Division in 1951/52, then the 2. Division in 1972/73 and again in 2007/08.

Nico Walentiny is the name the club puts before any other. He spent more than 40 years inside it, moving from the pitch into the boardroom, and now carries the title of Honorary President. Younger supporters point elsewhere: Gil Neves came through at Mensdorf between 2013 and 2022 before leaving for F91 Dudelange, then Benfica and 1. FC Cologne, switching his international allegiance from Luxembourg to Portugal along the way and lifting the 2025 UEFA European Under-17 Championship in Portuguese colours.

There is no derby with a name attached, but FC Munsbach fills that role by habit, the two clubs meeting again and again in the same divisions. For its own younger players, Syra Mensdorf pools resources with FC Jeunesse Canach under a joint youth set-up rather than running a full academy alone.

Matches are still played at the Stade op Biirk, 1,220 places including 220 under cover, in a town whose name in Luxembourgish is Menster — close enough to the club's own nickname, Syra Menster, that the two are barely said apart.
