It has hosted a club that started life as FC Arminia Reutlingen in 1905, took its current name after a 1911 merger with a swimming club.

Reutlingen reached the 2. Bundesliga twice, from 1963 to 1974 and again from 2000 to 2003. The second stay was cut short in 2003, when a 16th-place finish was made worse by a six-point deduction for financial irregularities and a licence refusal that dropped the club straight into the Oberliga. Insolvency forced a further fall, to the fifth tier, in 2010.

Between those collapses sit two amateur championships, in 1974 and 1997. The 2015 Württemberg Cup win sent Reutlingen into the DFB-Pokal, where they beat Karlsruher SC 3-1 before losing to Eintracht Braunschweig. Giuseppe Ricciardi captained that run and later stayed on as sporting director.
