Six decades on, the 1966–67 season is still the only one Sanjoanense have spent in Portugal's top flight.
The nearest they have come back was through the Segunda Divisão, which Sanjoanense won four times — 1965–66, 1998–99, 2000–01 and 2003–04. In the Taça de Portugal the club's best run ended in the quarter-finals in 1967–68.
Founded on 25 February 1924, the club plays in black and white and is known locally as the Alvinegros .
A first Taça de Portugal final, and a second season among the elite, are still what Sanjoanense have not managed.
