Schonnebeck

Sergio Allievi kicked his first balls at Schonnebeck as a boy. He went on to 1. FC Kaiserslautern and then to Fortuna Düsseldorf, where he won the DFB-Pokal in 1990.

Schonnebeck is a district of Essen . Two local sides, Spiel und Sport Schonnebeck and Ballspielverein Schonnebeck, merged in 1910. The present name, Spielvereinigung Schonnebeck 1910, has stood since 1920. The green-and-white side are the Swallows, and the ground at Schetters Busch is known locally as the "Schwalbennest".

The club spent most of its life below the level of its neighbours. It was a founding member of the Ruhrbezirksliga in 1946 and went down at once. It won the Landesliga Niederrhein in 1959, and in 1984 reached the Verbandsliga Niederrhein, then the second-highest regional league, which remains its greatest achievement on paper.

The years after 2016 were the strongest in recent memory. They finished second there in 2016/17, behind KFC Uerdingen 05, and second again in 2017/18, behind SV Straelen. In the 2016/17 Niederrheinpokal they reached the quarter-finals and lost 0-2 to Rot-Weiss Essen in extra time.

Dirk Tönnies coaches the side now, with Frank Isert as president. The club finished 4th in the Oberliga Niederrhein in 2025/26, the fifth tier of German football. The Schwalbennest holds 1,924 people.
