SGV Freiberg

Marco Kehl-Gómez, the captain, arrived at Freiberg with a professional career already behind him.

Freiberg's rise has come in steps, not in one leap. The Verbandsliga Württemberg title in 2001 took them up to the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg. After that came a wait of 11 years, then a second title in 2012 and a third in 2017. In 2022 they won the Oberliga itself and moved up to the Regionalliga.

The squad has drawn on Stuttgart's academy. Andreas Grimmer came through the VfB Stuttgart youth system. Karlo Kurányi joined from the same place, and his father Kevin Kurányi is a name German football knows well.

The nearest rival is VfR Heilbronn. Matches between them are often called a "Pokalduell", a cup duel, although the fixture has no fixed derby name.

The Wasenstadion holds 4,000, and it has been enough for a village club that grew into the Regionalliga. From 1 July 2026 the club was due to become SGV Heilbronn-Freiberg and play in the Frankenstadion in Heilbronn, which holds 17,284.

The name's first half goes back to 1973. Then the football departments of two neighbouring village clubs, SGV Heutingsheim and TSV Beihingen, joined to form one side. One of them traced its own line to FC Spartania Heutingsheim in 1913.
