Pavol Majerník wore Skalica's white and green before he ever stood on the touchline in a suit.

The badge above his players' heads has changed more often than the club's continuity suggests. Through the middle of the twentieth century it took the identity of whichever local employer kept it running: Sokol Tekla under the Tekla works, then Tatran, then for close to thirty years TJ ZVL under the ZVL bearing factory, before the old name returned after 1990 and the club settled on MFK Skalica in 2006. Founded in 1920, it has spent most of its life outside the top flight, stepping up on the strength of a second-place finish in the second division in 2014–15.

Its closest brush with a trophy came in 2017, when Skalica reached the final of the Slovenský pohár and ran into Slovan Bratislava, who won 3-0. Games against Senica carry more weight around town than any cup run — the Záhorácke derby is fought purely on pride between the two Záhorie towns.
