The Super Liga serves as the premier football competition in Slovakia, operating at the highest level of the national pyramid. Established in 1993 following the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, it replaced the previous unified league as the top tier for the newly independent nation. The tournament is currently branded as the Niké liga due to sponsorship agreements, a title it has held since 2023. The structure of the season involves a regular stage where twelve teams compete in a double round-robin format, resulting in 22 matches per side. This phase determines the pathway into the subsequent split. Following the regular season, the participating clubs divide into two distinct groups of six: the Championship Group and the Relegation Group. Members of the Championship Group contest a single round-robin for the title, while those in the Relegation Group battle to avoid dropping down to the second tier, known as the 2. Liga. Success in the Championship Group secures the national title and access to the UEFA Champions League qualifiers. Additionally, the second and third-place finishers, alongside the winner of the domestic cup, earn places in European competitions. The consequences of the Relegation Group are severe; the lowest-placed team faces automatic descent, while the eleventh-placed side from the regular season enters a two-legged playoff against the runner-up from the second division. Historically, ŠK Slovan Bratislava stands as the most successful entity in the competition's history, having claimed sixteen titles as of the 2025–26 season. MŠK Žilina follows with seven victories. The league has experienced various iterations in size and name over its three decades, including periods with sixteen and ten teams, before stabilising at twelve participants in 2006. Unlike some regional counterparts, the Slovak format relies on a simple two-group split rather than a more complex three-tier post-season arrangement.
