A group of young railwaymen put the side together in 1929 and played their early football in Phoenix Park before settling at Richmond Park, a few streets from the depot.

The ground holds 5,500 and has stayed the club's address for most of its life, with one interruption: money ran short in the 1990s and St Patrick's Athletic decamped to Harold's Cross for a spell before returning to Inchicore.

The gap that followed lasted a quarter of a century. There was a League Cup in 2001 and FAI Cups in 2014 and 2021, but nothing in the league until 2024, when the Saints took the championship and the FAI Cup in the same season. The club still counts 2002 as its own; a points deduction meant the title went elsewhere.

Shelbourne are the neighbours who matter most, and the Dublin derby between them carries more weight in Inchicore than any fixture on the calendar.

Pat Dolan managed the side to that 2001 League Cup, and he remains one of the more recognisable figures attached to the club, a Dublin football man in a Dublin football job. Red and white, Richmond Park, and the same corner of the city the railwaymen came from.
