Sligo Rovers

Sligo Rovers waited forty years between league titles before Billy Sinclair, a Scot who had played for Leeds, Manchester United and his country, brought the championship back to The Showgrounds in 1977. The FAI Cup has come more often — five times, most recently a run of three finals across 2010, 2011 and 2013.

The club was formed on 17 September 1928, when Sligo Town and Sligo Blues merged, and it played its first match six days later, beating Ballyshannon 9–1. It joined the League of Ireland in 1934.

Johnny Armstrong scored 138 goals in 380 appearances through the 1950s and early 1960s and remains the club's record scorer. Tony Fagan played 590 games across two decades from 1967, more than anyone else has managed in the shirt.

Home games are played at The Showgrounds, which holds 5,500, with 3,873 of those seats. The rivalry with Bohemians, played out as Dublin against Sligo despite the distance between them, has outlasted most on-field comparisons, though Shamrock Rovers pushed Sligo hardest for titles through the 2010s.
