Sua Flamingoes

Sowa sits beside the Sua Pan, the salt flats that give the town its industry and, through Sua Flamingoes, its nickname: "Bafana ba Letswai," the Boys of the Salt.

That changed in 2019–20. Sua Flamingoes had already lost one promotion playoff, against Prisons XI after finishing runners-up in Division One North in 2017–18, so the ambition was not new. When the pandemic forced the following season to be abandoned, the Division One North title was awarded on the table as it stood, and it went to Sowa. The club took its first-ever place in the Botswana Premier League on the back of a season nobody finished playing.

Since then the Flamingoes have held their ground rather than merely survived it: eighth in 2022–23, seventh the year after, and third in 2024–25, their best finish in the top flight so far. They have not added a league title or an FA Cup to the one honour that put them there, and they still play in front of 1,500 people at most at the Sowa Town Council Stadium, in the blue and white they have always worn.

Rahman Gumbo, who had managed Botswana's national side, was in charge for the promotion campaign.
