Umeå FC

Piteå IF is the club Umeå FC measures itself against, and the fixture between them carries its own name, the Norrlandsderbyt.

The merger of the football sections of Tegs SK and Sandåkerns SK in 1987 was meant to give young players in Norrland a route to elite football without leaving the region. Gimonäs CK, which had helped start the talks, withdrew, and IFK Holmsund declined to join. The founders set a target of Allsvenskan by 1994. They were a year late. The club finished second in Division 1 Norra in 1994, won the division in 1995 and reached the top flight for 1996. The "FC" in the name was added as a "Swenglish" flourish.

That 1996 season lasted one year. Umeå FC finished 11th and lost the qualification match to Ljungskile SK. It now carries the name Umeå Energi Arena and holds 6,000. Steve Galloway, who scored 114 goals between 1990 and 2000, remains the club's leading scorer. Shamo Quaye wore number 21 in 1996 and died the following year, and the shirt number was retired in his memory.

After 1996 the club moved between divisions. When Superettan was created in 2000, Umeå FC was the only Norrland side in it. The club returned through a qualification in 2005 and won Division 1 Norra in 2011. It came back through qualification in 2019, then won the renamed Ettan Norra in 2024 and took direct promotion for 2025 under head coach Anders Bååth.
