The ground on Idrottsvägen has not moved since the club started playing on it, and the club has been at that site since 1903. It has changed name more than once — Idrottsparken, then Norrporten Arena, now NP3 Arena — and it was rebuilt across 2001 and 2002, but the address stayed put. It holds 8,000, with 5,000 of those seats under cover. The biggest crowd it ever took came on 15 October 1961, when 16,507 packed in for a match against Högadals IS.

The club that plays there grew out of the temperance movement. It began as Godtemplarnas Idrottsförening i Sundsvall, an athletics society tied to the IOGT, and membership required members to stay sober. That condition was relaxed by 1920, when the name became Gymnastik- och Idrottsföreningen Sundsvall. There has never been a merger.

No Swedish title has come. Fifth place in 1988 remains the high mark in the top flight, and the closest thing to a cup run was the semi-final of 2007. The medals in the cabinet are of a different order: the Norra series of Division 1 in 1990 and 1999, and the Norrland championship of 1942.

Leif Forsberg played through two spells, 1980 to 1988 and 1990 to 2001, made more than 400 appearances and scored 143 goals. His number 10 is the only shirt the club has withdrawn.

The rivalry that carries most weight is with Hudiksvalls FF — Medelpad against Hälsingland, filed under the general heading of the Norrland derby. Sandvikens IF have been the more frequent opponents lately, in Superettan among other places.

Second place in Superettan came in 2011, 2014 and again in 2021.
