Viktoria Aschaffenburg

Aschaffenburg had two football clubs before it had one it kept. FC Aschaffenburg dated from August 1901, and FC Viktoria Aschaffenburg followed in 1902. On 24 June 1904 the two merged into SV Viktoria 01 Aschaffenburg.

The club's first long spell at a high level came after the Second World War. It played in the Oberliga Süd from 1947 to 1963 and finished fifth in 1956. Ernst Lehner, the striker who had played for the club after the war, coached it twice, from 1950 to 1953 and again from 1959 to 1961. Both spells fell inside those Oberliga years.

The 1980s brought the club's best-known run. Viktoria won the Oberliga Hessen in 1985 and went up to the 2. Bundesliga. They came back down, won the league again in 1988 and went up a second time. In that same 1987–88 season they knocked out 1. FC Köln and Hessen Kassel and reached the quarter-finals of the DFB-Pokal, still their best cup run. They played three seasons in the 2. Bundesliga in all, the last of them in 1988–89.

The 2000s were leaner. A financial relegation to the Verbandsliga followed in 2009/10. Two years earlier Andreas Möller had taken over as manager for the 2007–08 season and worked without pay. Their nearest rival is Kickers Offenbach, and the meetings are called the Main-Derby.

The Stadion am Schönbusch has not seen second-tier football since 1989. The Bavarian Cup final of 2019 ended in defeat.
