Volga Ulyanovsk

Home games are played at the Central "Trud" Stadium, named for Lev Yashin. The name is the kind that outlasts the buildings around it — Trud, "labour," a Soviet-era stadium tag attached to factory teams across the country, and Ulyanovsk's version has carried the club through every version of itself since the pitch was first laid out.

There have been several versions. The team that plays there now traces back to 16 May 1947, when it took the field for the first time under the name Torpedo. It became Dynamo in 1958, Spartak for three seasons after that, and only in 1962 did the name Volga arrive, sticking for fourteen years until the local authorities disbanded the club outright in 1976. Volga itself came back in 1995, backed by the Ulyanovsk Mechanical Plant, and folded again in February 2005 when the club was merged into FC Lada-SOK. A year later it returned once more, first as an amateur side called Volga-Energiya, then from 2007 back to professional football under its old name.

Through all of that, the club has mostly lived in Russia's second and third tiers, collecting zonal titles rather than national ones — a class "B" zone in 1967, the Ural-Volga zone of the second division in 2007, a fourth group of the second-tier FNL-2 in 2021/22. The nearest brush with a bigger stage came in 2022/23, when Volga reached the last 16 of the Russian Cup. In black and yellow — yellow shirts and socks, black shorts at home, all black away — the players are known to supporters simply as the Volzhane, the people of the Volga.

None of it has moved the club far from Trud, where it has returned after every collapse and every relaunch, in front of a crowd that never asked for more than 8,000 seats.
