The idea of a merged Aarhus club had failed once already. In 1999, Idrætsklubben Skovbakken tried to build a superclub called FC Aarhus with Aarhus Fremad; Skovbakken dropped away into the lower divisions.

The name almost did not. When the two football departments agreed in 2015 to fold into one, the plan was to call it FC Vejlby. VSK Aarhus came into being on 1 July 2016.

The club started in the 2. That ended in June 2025, when VSK won the CampoBet 3. division and went back up.

The rivalry that matters most is with Aarhus Fremad — the same club Skovbakken once tried to merge with — and the fixture is known as the Derby della vice Capitale, the derby of the second capital.
