The Asia Cup stands as the premier continental cricket championship for Asian nations, organised by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). It defines the pinnacle of senior men's competition for the region, sitting above developmental tournaments like the ACC Men's Premier Cup. The event is distinct from global fixtures such as the ICC Champions Trophy and multi-sport appearances at the Asian Games, serving as the exclusive biennial title for Asian cricket.
The tournament structure centres on a group stage followed by knockout phases. Eight teams are currently divided into two groups of four, playing a round-robin format. The top two sides from each group advance to the "Super Four" stage, another round-robin mini-league. The leading two teams from that stage then contest a single-match final. The competition alternates between One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International (T20I) formats, often aligning with International Cricket Council World Cup cycles.
Participation includes Full Member nations who qualify automatically based on their status with the global governing body. Associate members fill the remaining spots through qualifiers, typically emerging from the ACC Men's Premier Cup or a dedicated Asia Cup Qualifier. This pathway allows teams such as Nepal to compete alongside established powerhouses.
India holds the record for success, having won the tournament seven times. Sri Lanka follows as the second-most successful nation with six titles, while Pakistan has claimed victory twice. The current holder is India, which secured the 2025 T20 edition by defeating Pakistan in the final. They also won the most recent ODI edition in 2023 against Sri Lanka.
The competition has seen significant expansion since its inception. Initially featuring three or four teams in ODI format, it grew to include six nations in 2004 and expanded to eight teams by 2025. This growth reflects the increasing competitiveness and depth of cricket across the continent.
