About

Pakistan Super League stands as the premier professional Twenty20 cricket competition in Pakistan. Founded by the Pakistan Cricket Board in 2015, the tournament began play in 2016. It occupies the highest position within the domestic cricket pyramid, sitting above regional contests such as the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy and the National T20 Cup. The league operates on a franchise model where teams hold licenses and enter through expansion rather than performance-based promotion or relegation.

The 2026 season introduced structural changes, shifting the tournament window from February and March to April and May to enhance overseas player availability and mitigate weather disruptions. This adjustment coincided with a modification in franchise fee structures, moving from USD to PKR. The competition features eight city-based franchises, including Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Islamabad United, Peshawar Zalmi, Quetta Gladiators, Multan Sultans, Hyderabad Kingsmen, and Sialkot Stallionz. The format consists of a double round-robin group stage followed by a Page playoff system involving the top four teams, culminating in a final.

Performance records highlight specific successes within the league. Islamabad United and Lahore Qalandars are the most successful teams, each holding three titles. Islamabad United claimed victories in 2016, 2018, and 2024. Lahore Qalandars secured their titles in 2022, 2023, and 2025. Peshawar Zalmi won the 2026 final, securing their second title. Title sponsorship is held by Habib Bank Limited, making it the HBL PSL.

The league differs significantly from Australia's Big Bash League despite similarities in team count and format. The PSL is a single entity owned by the PCB, with franchises owned by private investors paying annual fees. In contrast, BBL franchises are primarily owned by state cricket associations. Player recruitment also diverges; the PSL transitioned to an auction system for the 2026 season with a USD 1.6 million player purse, while the BBL utilizes a draft system for international players alongside retention mechanisms.
