Prime Minister's XI is an invitational cricket side assembled by the Australian government to host a warm-up fixture against visiting national teams. Established in 1951, the initiative was launched by Prime Minister Robert Menzies, with the inaugural match taking place in October of that year against the West Indies. The team consists of players selected from Australia’s domestic circuit.

The fixture operates outside the formal structure of international cricket. It carries no pyramid status, promotion or relegation rights. Instead, it serves as a single preparatory game held prior to the commencement of official Test series. While the event is traditionally hosted at Manuka Oval in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, the venue may change depending on logistical requirements.

The format is typically a two-day contest, though weather conditions can reduce the length to 50 overs per side, as occurred in the 2024 encounter with India. The match is not an annual guarantee; gaps in the schedule have seen it omitted in years such as 2016, 2020 and 2021, often when no Test series was planned.

In November and December 2024, the side faced the India national cricket team in Canberra. This clash preceded the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, a bilateral series separate from this warm-up event. The trophy itself was instituted in 1996–97 and is named after Sunil Gavaskar and Allan Border. Australia currently holds the trophy following a 3–2 victory in the 2024–25 series, while India leads the historical record with ten wins to Australia’s six.

The Prime Minister's XI operates under the coordination of Cricket Australia but lacks an official website or independent governing body. The fixture provides a transitional opportunity for both squads before the rigours of the main tournament begin.
