Caribbean Premier League 2020/21

Caribbean Premier League is the top-tier Twenty20 cricket competition in the West Indies. Launched in 2013 under the banner of Cricket West Indies (CWI), it replaced earlier regional tournaments to establish a consistent franchise model for the region. The league operates independently of promotion or relegation systems found in traditional domestic structures, with teams holding fixed commercial rights.

The tournament employs a distinctive scheduling method known as the "home week." Rather than dispersing matches across a long season, each franchise hosts all its home fixtures within a single week at rotating venues. This format concentrates fan engagement and reduces logistical complexity for travelling squads. Teams represent geographical regions or islands rather than individual cities, reinforcing the cultural connection between the clubs and their local populations.

Player selection differs from other major leagues through a draft system designed to maintain competitive balance. This approach contrasts with auction-based models used elsewhere, aiming to distribute talent more evenly among the participating franchises. The structure includes a group stage where teams compete in a double round-robin format, followed by a playoff series comprising an eliminator, two qualifiers, and a final match.

Historical success has been concentrated in recent years. The Trinbago Knight Riders hold the record for victories, securing the championship five times between 2015 and 2025. Other notable finals include the 2021 decider, which the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots won on the last ball, and the 2024 title claimed by St Lucia Kings. The league has also undergone sponsorship transitions, operating under names such as Limacol, Hero, and currently Republic Bank.

Participation numbers have fluctuated since inception. While the initial seasons featured fewer sides, the current iteration includes six franchises. Older entries like the Jamaica Tallawahs were rebranded or replaced in subsequent years, with the Antigua Hawksbills giving way to the Antigua & Barbuda Falcons in 2015. These changes reflect the ongoing evolution of the league’s commercial and sporting landscape.
